Erev Shabbat Shalom

from Rechavia and Nachlaot in Jerusalem!

How do we finish Chumash Bereshit this week?

"And Yosef died…

and he was put in a casket".

And then everyone says aloud:

Chazak! Chazak! Venitchazek!
It doesn’t sound very logical to me,

to say that the Tzaddik of the generation passed away,

and in the same breath to declare:

Chazak! What kind of reassurance is that?

This is the saddest thing you can imagine!
And either way, there is a rule:

We end on a positive note

:No matter what the subject is.

When you finish a book,

A subject or a Masechet,

we always need to finish on a positive note.

So how does the Torah finish parshat "VaYechi",

and Chumash Bereshitwith the passing of Yosef?
Rather, there is a verycomforting and reassuring message here:
It is true that it is very sad that the Tzaddikis no longer physically here.

Everyone wants a tangible relationship with the Tzaddik.

But the Torah tells us not to worry.

Where was Yosef buried?In Egypt!

Meaning, you are now about to beginthe slavery in Egypt.

Don’t worry.

Yosef is with you for the entire Galut.

And that is why Yosef makes Am Yisroel vow:"

I have ordered you…",

that they will take him out of Egypt with them.
That is why,

Moshe Rabeinu himselftook care of Yosef's casket,

and brought "Yosef's bones" with him.

Bones also means "Atzamot" from the word "essence".

That is to say,

when the holy body of Yosef is with Am Yisroel,

his entire essence is with them,

in the Galut.
Now we can understandwhy we end reading the Torahwith the declaration "Chazak! Chazak! Venitchazek!",

meaning, it is reassurance,

strength and encouragement,in the final moments of Galut,

this is the strength not to be overwhelmed by the Galut,

and other matters which make it hard to serve Hashemcomes from knowing that Yosefis always with Am Yisroel.

Chazak! Chazak! Venitchazek!

 Have a Shabbat Shalom!
